How to read these codes

  • Code point (like U+2731) is the character's permanent ID in the Unicode standard. Every device and app uses the same number.
  • HTML (like ✱) is how to write the character in a web page's source code if you can't paste it directly.
  • Each symbol's page also has the CSS, JavaScript, Python and URL-encoded versions, plus how to type it on Mac, Windows, Chromebook and Linux.

Lookalikes that aren't asterisks

Some characters look like asterisks but are officially something else. They're worth knowing, because search tools and screen readers treat them differently.

Symbol Name Code point What it's for
Black star U+2605 Ratings and stars. See asterisk vs. star.
Six pointed black star U+2736 A filled six-point star.
Eight pointed black star U+2734 Also an emoji (✴️).
Star operator U+22C6 Math, for example the Hodge star.
Reference mark U+203B Notes in Japanese, Chinese and Korean text.
Sparkle U+2747 Also an emoji (❇️).

Why do some show up as boxes?

A box, or a box with a question mark, means the font on your device doesn't include that character. The character itself is fine: paste it somewhere with a different font and it will usually appear. Each symbol's page has a "Will it show up?" note so you know how risky it is before you use it in a bio or a logo.
