What the squared asterisk is used for
- Boxed operators in mathematical notation.
- Checklist-style or "special item" markers in plain text.
- Icon-like marks in technical documents.
Good to know
It belongs to a set of boxed operators that includes ⊞ and ⊠. Font support is thinner than for the circled version. If it shows as an empty box, the font doesn't include it. Math fonts such as STIX and Cambria Math do.
Will it show up? Not in every default font. It may show as a box on older Android phones and some Windows apps.
