How to type an asterisk on a Chromebook

Press Shift + 8. For any other asterisk, press Ctrl + Shift + U, type its code (like 2731 for ✱), then press Space.

Unicode input, step by step

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + U. An underlined u appears.
  2. Type the code. For example, 2731 for ✱, 2042 for ⁂ or 2217 for ∗.
  3. Press Space or Enter to turn it into the symbol.

Codes for every asterisk are in our symbols list. Unicode input works with the US English keyboard. If nothing happens, check that your input method is set to English (US) in your keyboard input settings.

The emoji and symbol picker

Press Search + Shift + Space (on some keyboards the key is labelled with a launcher or "everything" icon), or right-click a text field and choose Emoji. Search asterisk to find the emoji versions, or switch to the Symbols tab for more.

If Shift + 8 types something else

Your Chromebook is set to a different keyboard layout. Check the input settings (Settings → Device → Keyboard and inputs on recent versions; menu names vary between ChromeOS releases) to see and change the active layout.
